Pictorial Post: Have you heard of Bekal Fort in Kasaragod — a Magnificent and Historical structure in North of Kerala?
India and Historical monuments are almost inseparable. Such is the richness in her culture and the pride in her people, where their valor has testified the brutal test of time. The Bekal Fort of Kasaragod is also one amongst the many such living illustrations of this rich heritage, history and heroism.
Kasaragod is the northern-most district of Kerala and hosts this beautiful fort of Bekal which is one of the biggest in size (spreading over 40 acres) and is one of the best preserved forts of the country. Constructed in 1650 CE, Bekal fort has been a major administrative center for centuries and it is reportedly noted to have served as an important military station for Tipu Sultan.
The Kerala government has now taken up a massive beautification program which boasts of some remarkable restoration and tourism led initiatives. Incidentally, I belong to Bekal (Mom’s hometown) and have been visiting this Fort since childhood. The last I visited was in November, 2016 and I could see great deal of development work!
The visiting hours of Bekal fort are from 8 am to 5 pm and entry fees are nominal both for Indians and Foreigners. The fort has a pristine beach next to it which gets illuminated during the evening hours for tourists. The locals here do not speak English and there are no guides as yet at this place. Bekal fort is close to Mangalore railway station or airport and if you plan to stay here, then there are couple of resorts close by.
Lastly, I am not sure if you have know the Mani Ratnam fame song “Tu Hi Re…” of a Hindi movie named ‘Bombay’. This song has been picturised at Bekal Fort. You can watch the song here.
Let me take you to… one of my favorite places through my pictures :)
So, if you happen to be driving to down south of Kerala, then you know you have to take a customary halt at this old but yet, beautiful art of history!
Hope you enjoyed the journey to Bekal Fort through my pictures.
Till next time.. just travel!
Cheers!
